2022 HLPOA Kids Fishing Derby

The derby is back!  Again in 2022 it will be held virtually as it was in 2020 and 2021, making it safer during the pandemic.

This Year’s Rules:

  • ·        The derby is open to kids and youth under the age of 18. If you are over 18, you are definitely welcome to submit your catches, there’s just no prizes for you:-). There’s no cost for the derby this year.
  • ·        This year we will have categories for all of the different fish species in Horseshoe Lake. So, if it’s a fish and you catch it in Horseshoe Lake, you can submit it!
  • ·        As there is no fish fry again this year, we will be “grading” catches on the length of the fish (catch‐and‐release):
  • o   To submit your catch, take a picture of you holding your fish AND a picture of the fish beside a tape measure or ruler such that the length of the fish is shown.
  • o   Do your best to take that measurement photo in a way that is safe for the fish. Some options include either holding it out of the water briefly to measure and photograph it or keep the fish in a bin with water and put the tape measure beside it for the photo.
  • o   You can then release your fish so they can grow even bigger!
  • ·        Once you have measured your fish and taken those pictures, you can submit them by posting them on the 2022 Kids Fishing Derby event on the closed Horseshoe Lake (HLPOA) Facebook group or you can send them directly to horseshoelakeminden@gmail.com . Submit by 2:00 pm sharp!
  • ·        We will have prizes for the top 2 biggest fish of each species caught by participants in the following age categories: 0 – 7, 8 – 12, and 13 – 18. Delivery/pickup of prizes will be coordinated with the winners after the event and will be done in a manner which is safe for everyone.

Questions…and Answers!

Q: Where will my pictures and catch lengths be posted?

A: The Facebook group and fishing derby event are “closed”, meaning only those who are members of the Horseshoe Lake (HLPOA) Facebook group will be able to see them. To be in the closed Facebook group, you have to request to join and be approved by the HLPOA administrators. The posting of photos on the closed Facebook event/group is considered consent for use within the closed group, but not beyond the closed group. Photos submitted through  horseshoelakeminden@gmail.com will not be posted but will be eligible for prizes.

Q: What if I want to participate in the derby but don’t want to post on Facebook?

A: No problem. Just email the photos and lengths of your fish to horseshoelakeminden@gmail.com and we’ll enter your catches in the derby.

Q: What if I don’t know what kind of fish it is?

A: No problem. Submit a photo and the length of the fish as outlined above. We’ll identify and enter your catch and teach you how to identify it for next time!

Q: Can I keep my catch and have my own fish fry?

A: You sure can – so long as you are following the regulations for Fisheries Management Zone 15. A great summary is found here: https://www.ontario.ca/document/ontario‐fishing‐regulations‐summary/fisheries‐management‐zone‐15.

When choosing fish to take for the table, we encourage you to consider selective harvest. Selective harvest means strategically choosing which fish species and sizes to keep, so that we can have strong fish populations in future years. For Horseshoe, you can apply selective harvest by:

  • i.           Choosing to harvest the more prolific species (e.g., rock bass, pike) while releasing other species, &
  • ii.           Choosing to keep medium sized fish, rather than the big ones. Not only do big fish have “big fish” genetics that we’d like to keep reproducing, but they produce the most eggs during spawning season.

Happy Fishing and Have Fun!!
